The 2 things that are the most important to me when tackling a 3 or 5 min pose are:
-get the overall "feel" or energy of the pose. I know it sounds generic, but I really try to capture the intensity/movement/tone of the pose. Technically, I try to find a strong line or gesture within the pose and try to make everything else support that idea.
-find where and how the weight is distributed (mainly figuring out what leg supports most of the weight)
After that, I look for clear angles or corners that will help me make the pose stronger. It could be the angle of the jaw or the squash in the torso or maybe a nice clear angle formed by the hands.
There's other stuff to look for of course, but that's generally all I have time to put on paper before moving on to the next.

great, are you thinking about a particular principal, or idea when you're doing these.. or does it fall under practice? both perhaps?

when you say.. "find a strong line or gesture"
Are you talking about the same thing there? This line is more of an abstract thing, yes?
Love your life drawings!
